Photo Report Cultivate '16

Here is the photo report that we made during Cultivate’16, the largest all-industry horticulture exposition and convention in North America. This three-day event concluded last Tuesday and brought together a nicely balanced mix of greenhouse technology, supplies, starting material and finished plants.

Also the FloralDaily and HortiDaily team was present at the show to make a full photo report.

The show is a good opportunity for the exhibitors to showcase their service or product range and in particular their novelties for the US market. In the breeding and starting material category, for example, we see more and more varieties that can be put in the so called Fairy gardens. These type of gardens are becoming increasingly popular in the USA and require small and 'fairytale looking' plants. Besides that, we also saw an increasing offer of drought resistant varieties. "The drought in California forces us to become more innovative and develop more heat and drought resistant varieties", says one of the breeders exhibiting at the show.

Also in the pots, labels and tags category, we see a trend. There is a high focus on the looks. Pots and pot covers printed with high resolution pictures were largely displayed. The cover pots are often used by growers as they can be equipped with a self-watering system. Also the labels, tags and handles need to look attractive and need to survive the entire chain. All in all, the aim of these better supplies is to increase the sales for the grower.

The techniques department is becoming larger each year. Growers are investing in techniques and the increasing salaries of the greenhouse workers makes it more interesting for the growers to automate tasks that are currently being carried out manually.

Expansion Cultivate'17
Next year the show will be held from July 15-18, 2016, but there will be some changes coming to this Cultivate’17. This was announced by Ken Fisher, AmericanHort President and Chief Executive Officer, at the Sunday Keynote presentation. "Cultivate’17 is the year it’s happening. Last year, the Greater Columbus Convention Center announced its renovation, which meant the plans we had ready could finally be initiated. Cultivate’16 has been the building year, and we’ve appreciated everyone’s patience and understanding that growth requires change and flexibility."

Attendees and exhibitors alike will appreciate the following updates to their Cultivate’17 experience:
  • A fresh look. The mission of AmericanHort is to be an industry leader, paradigm-shifter, and status quo disrupter. Cultivate’17 accomplishes all of this with a trade show floorplan refreshed to maximize the attendee experience and the exhibitor ROI. That means more corner spaces, islands, and design strategies to facilitate exhibitor-attendee interaction.
  • More room. The Solutions Marketplace trade show floor is expanding by 30,000 square feet. That means a new trade show floor plan and exposure opportunities to accommodate every exhibitor’s needs and budget. Plus, additional space for The Knowledge Center and maybe even a book store.
  • New opportunities for connecting. From a “fast-pitch” stage to showcase a company’s exciting products, to on-the-floor meeting space, learning space, and more, there are more opportunities than ever before to showcase the brand new and the tried and true.
"This refresh for Cultivate’17 is no different than what most of us have been doing with our own businesses - restrategizing, reorganizing, and thinking ahead to future customer expectations", said longtime exhibitor and AmericanHort Chairman Terri Cantwell. "Change can be scary, but I’ve been coming to Cultivate for 28 years, and I’m excited about the changes coming. It’s good to see an organization making great changes for good reasons at the perfect time."
