Sunflower on the Flower Agenda

The sunflower is on the Flower Agenda. Companies can draw buyers’ attention to sunflowers and respond to the interest of European consumers in this cheerful flower. Vacation, sun, sea and cheerfulness, the sunflower offers the ultimate feeling of summer. That is why this flower is the highlight of weeks 30 - 32 on the Flower Agenda: when European consumers are most interested in it.

History and origin
The sunflower, or Helianthus, originates from North and South America. Together with beans, corn and pumpkins, the sunflower was one of the most important food sources for the native Americans. Sunflower oil was used extensively for cooking. And it was considered to have healing properties.

The name is a combination of the Greek words Helios (sun) and Anthos (flower). It is an annual plant that can grow very tall. The tallest sunflower ever measured reached 7 meters.

Use
As a cut flower, it forms a summery centre to a cheerful and lavish bouquet, but it is becoming increasingly popular in bunches on its own and as a bridal bouquet. This flower has a wide range of applications and is grown in large numbers.

In the wild, the head of the sunflower turns on sunny days to follow the sun. At night it turns back to face east. This is called heliotropism. In Greek mythology the nymph Clytia fell in love with the sun god Apollo. He didn't return her love, however, and she succumbed to misery, changing into a sunflower that constantly follows the sun as if to keep it in sight.

Flower Agenda
The Flower Agenda 2016 turns the spotlight on 15 flowers, arranged according to the season in which they are available and consumers are particularly aware of them. It also offers inspiration for bouquets by focusing on other flowers that expand the possibilities. The agenda tells the story that goes with the flower, and offers inspiration and striking images.
