Hansa Flowers concludes welfare program 2016

"Ethiopia: "Employees are our most valuable assets"

Hansa Flowers concluded its welfare program 2016. After launching their first Corporate Social Responsibility activities in September 2015, they have widened the program by adding new segments. The program was successfully concluded on September 8, combined with Ethiopian New Year celebration.

During the celebration, Hansa Flowers employees and their children were honored with special gifts and cash awards. They even have gone beyond their project area by supplying food grains to the drought affected villages in Ethiopia by joining hands with the local administration.

"Our company believes in fairness and justice to people and we always set higher standards with regard to working conditions and worker’s benefits. We can say beyond doubt that our employees have achieved a leap in their economic and social spheres, within the short span of two years with us. We never limit ourselves to the legal obligations for rewarding the employees, as they are the most valuable assets of the company", says Mr. Sujit General Manager of Hansa Flowers.

Welfare program
The human resources department of Hansa Flowers has a close relationship with the entire workforce and they developed a system to know them personally. "Essential information regarding workers through a survey has helped us to plan welfare programmes to improve their living standards. Our company is also taking interest to develop the nearby villages by slowly stepping into their needs. Thus, we have started water supply to the villages near our farms. In 2016, we have gone beyond our project area to supply food grains to the drought affected villages in Ethiopia by joining hands with the local administration.''

They have explored the possibilities of linking with Non-Government Organizations working in Holeta region. Though the scope is very limited, few activities like self help groups, health awareness and medical support are taking place in collaboration with DORCAS Ethiopia (a christian relief organisation with projects in Eastern Europe and Africa.). Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA) is also actively engaged with them for providing various training programmes.

School kits for children
Hansa Flowers has its own CSR activities which were first launched in September 2015 with the supply of school kits to children. This year they have widened the programme by adding new segments and the programme was successfully concluded on September 8. "The yearly baseline survey is our data base for collecting details for planning welfare measures. Though most of our employees dream of their children achieving great heights, the cost of education sometimes shatters their dreams. That is how we decided to supply school kits for our employee’s children. We prepared the list of school going children in all farms: we have 309 children studying in kindergarten to grade 3, 172 children studying in grade 4-6 and 118 children who have reached grade 7 and above. Note books, stationery and compass boxes were supplied as per the need in each level", explains Mr. Sujit. The company spent Birr 58000 on school materials for 599 children in their five farms.

Honouring seniors
Another group of people added in the welfare list of 2016 are the seniors in their farms. "We have 51 employees above 55 years. All of them were honoured in the function and gifted with a nice woolen blanket", says Mr. Sujit. Above the special gifts, all their employees got a cash award of birr 100 from the company for the New Year celebration.

"Hansa management is proud of our workers organising capacity, cooperation and team spirit to make our programmes successful. Our total expense for the New Year celebration and welfare was birr 248,000", says Mr. Sujit.

Hansa Flowers
Hansa Flowers ventured into Ethiopia in 2014 with a profound interest in the development of the Ethiopian people. The floriculture sector has been chosen due to its huge potential for employment creation. They have five flower farms in the Oromia region named Holeta Rose, Hansa Flowers, Oromia Wonders, Dream Flowers and Alliance Flowers. More than 1400 people are employed in these farms with a major proportion of women workers.
