Northend Gardens' pink passion is called the Medinilla

The Oorsprong family of Northend Gardens in Jordan Station, Ontario opened their doors last week for the Canadian Greenhouse Conference Bus Tour. Carrie, Ted and Jon toured us around and showed us what kind of impact the introduction of the exclusive Medinilla variety had on their day-to-day production process and how it transferred their flower and bedding plant business into a one of its kind award winning exotic plant nursery.

Ever since Northend Gardens imported the first unrooted Medinilla cuttings from Holland, their business has been in an upward trend. They started with Medinilla production on 30% of their acreage and currently half of their operations are filled with the variety that is native to the Philippines. The Oorsprong family changed the infrastructure of their greenhouse operations and optimized it for the cultivation of the shade loving tropical plant. With the help of Dutch colleagues and consultants, they figured out the ideal cultivation strategy and successfully became the exclusive grower of the award wining plant in the U.S. and Canada.
