Last Friday Kwekerij Zeurniet in Honselersdijk celebrated its 30th anniversary with fellow growers, friends and family and a couple of suppliers. The occasion was also used to present the nursery’s new house style.
Both green and flowering pot plants (Dendrodium, Vanda) are grown in the 3 ha greenhouse. Very different crops but that’s not a problem for the Scheffers. Tom Scheffers, fifth generation Scheffers at the nursery, along with his brother Stef: "Business is consistently good. If one’s doing well, the other might be doing less and vice versa."
Over the years products have come and gone. The last major step in this regard has been the introduction of the Vanda cut flowers two years ago. The product can justifiably be called exclusive: growing it is difficult, the number of suppliers is very limited and the color diversity is notable (especially blue, which almost doesn’t occur in nature). Zeurniet offers the Vanda flowers under the brand Su-Su.
As you may imagine, the name ‘Zeurniet’ (Don’t whine) once started as a joke. Apparently there were often wrongful deliveries because Scheffers was not the only Scheffers in the area. Several vendors suggested that they change the name, after which ‘Zeurniet’ stuck. The name was officially adopted in 1985.
The history of Kwekerij Zeurniet goes back longer than that. In another 3 years the Scheffers family will have been present at this same location in Westland for a century and they will probably be celebrating again. Kwekerij Zeurniet can be found at the Trade Fair, Booth 36.14
