"Michael Obwacha, Flora Bene: "Hopefully the USD will not drop"

US election has Kenyan growers worried

What will happen with the exchange rate after Trump's election? This is one of the main questions for Kenyan farmers. "We make most transactions in the US currency. With the change of leadership, we are hoping that the US currency will not lower in value against the euro", says Michael Obwacha of Flora Bene, a Kenyan rose farm.

The USA isn't a main export country for many Kenyan farmers. However, they have to deal with this currency as all their procurements are done in dollars, while they make and receive their payments in euros and pounds as a universal currency.

Besides the concern regarding the drop in value of the USD, they also fear for their relationships with foreigners. The election also brought a hot debate on whether the world community will change with the new President-elect. "We have foreign farmers and investors who are also hoping there will be no change in their relationship with their places of work, in relation to the utterances made by the new US president. Especially in the fields of flowers where diversity is very high and people are from different countries, communities, races, religions and even tongues. We have been on the front line at creating a network that binds all the above."
