Open house at Van Der Hoorn Orchideeën, 19 November, Ter Aar

NL: First ‘Gasless Greenhouse’ 10 years

Ten years ago Van der Hoorn Orchideeën built a unique nursery: the 'First Gasless Greenhouse’. The first plants, Phalaenopsis Multiflora, went in in November 2006. A decade later the anniversary is a great opportunity to open the company doors to local residents, relations and other interested parties.

No natural gas, no CO2
The greenhouse uses 0% natural gas. Heating and cooling is done using groundwater located at a depth of 80 to 100 meters below the surface that always has about 11 degrees. Fans are used to get the heat/cold into the greenhouse. Shortages are resolved with a heat/cold pump powered by green energy so CO2 emissions have also been reduced to 0. (For more information on the operation of this greenhouse, click here).

Van Der Hoorn Orchideeën annually propagates 1 million phalaenopsis multiflora from small plants to beautifully flowering plants. The company offers a wide range of products in many colors like pink, lilac, red, yellow, orange, purple, white and several color combinations: spotted, striped and speckled. The Multiflora are sold under the label ‘Amore Mio’. This stands for the love and passion with which these plants are supposedly propagated by the team. It allows the company to supply long-flowering plants with at least 20 quality flower buds.
