For Ruigrok, it is the season for planting at the nursery. And an important season it is! Fall is the perfect time where they plant their flower bulbs so they can grow big and strong for harvest season next year.
Planting flower bulbs
Spring-flowering bulbs such as tulips, daffodils and hyacinths are planted in the autumn, from September to December, before the first ground frost. Summer-flowering bulbs such as dahlias and calla lilies are planted in the spring as soon as there is no risk of ground frost. The flower bulbs are put up straight, to ensure optimum growth.
Selecting
After the harvest, flower bulbs go through a selecting process, and the big and beautiful ones are shipped to customers overseas. The smaller ones are left behind in the Netherlands to grow for another year on the fields. After the blooming and culling period where they select the strongest and tallest bulbs and after the sales, they are left with a stock of promising young flower bulbs. In October and November these bulbs are replanted again.
