In recent years, Queen invested in new technologies to further their ambition of a climate- and environment-friendly production. This has resulted in a new propagation area with 100% climate controlled growth conditions, where multilayer cultivation, high humidity, heat recovery and LED lighting constitute basic elements in optimising production and minimising energy consumption in Denmark.
The purpose of the LED investment is to reduce electricity consumption by 30-50% over a five-year period and heat consumption by 25% per production unit.
"We are well on our way to realising that ambition, and a large part of our kalanchoe production now takes place under LED lights, making it possible for us to produce kalanchoes in four layers, and in even better quality. What is more, the rooting period is reduced by 25% which yields savings of both electricity and heat," the company reports in a news release.
"We are very proud of, and pleased with, our new LED facility, which also helps us maintain the desired temperature levels for the benefit of plant growth and, consequently, quality."
