Smithers-Oasis Belgium has announced that its new state-of-the-art plant, housing production of Floralife postharvest products, is fully operational in Hasselt, Belgium. The new plant replaces a previous facility destroyed by fire in late 2016.
In the early hours of November 5, 2016, the fire occurred between shifts. Fortunately, there were no injuries, despite the total loss of property. While local authorities were battling the blaze, Smithers-Oasis management was forming contingency plans. Smithers-Oasis Belgium quickly rerouted production and distribution functions for its postharvest flower care and floral supply products to its various facilities across the globe. As authorities investigated the cause of the fire, our crews began the task of cleanup and rebuilding.

A few months later, the plant has reopened and production has commenced. Marco Marques, Managing Director of Smithers-Oasis Belgium Postharvest, expressed his gratitude. “We hardly missed a beat, thanks to the efforts of the Smithers-Oasis team members across the globe. We wish to offer a special thanks to our valued partners throughout the flower chain: the growers, bouquet makers, wholesalers, supermarkets, retailers and ultimately, flower enthusiasts. They stuck with us through a very trying episode and we aim to keep earning that loyalty for many years to come.”
