US (MI): Greenhouse operator claims she was fired for being a whistleblower

Holland's former greenhouse operator is suing the city after she claims she was fired for reporting unsafe work conditions in the city's century-old greenhouse.

The city fired Shelly DeVries in December 2017 from her 10-year career as greenhouse operator - a role that meant she was responsible for growing and planting many of the floral displays around Holland.

DeVries filed a lawsuit Jan. 3 in Ottawa County Circuit Court, seeking damages, lost wages, lost fringe benefits and for the court to order the city to cooperate with the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

DeVries believes she was fired not for her job performance, but for speaking out about the condition of the greenhouse in which she works, according to the lawsuit.

"These buildings would not pass any MIOSHA inspection, and I have been told that our city inspectors will not even step foot into the building because they do not want to have to deal with what they see," DeVries wrote to the city council in the Oct. 27 email.
