UK: Alternative growing media for the production of ornamental crops

AHDB will host demonstrations and discussions about the benefits and challenges of reducing peat content in ornamentals production.

Reductions in peat use have been modest in ornamentals production, and have generally not involved any major changes to the production process, for example in terms of nutritional programmes or irrigation frequencies.

Join in the debate as we discuss whether now is the right time to make the ‘leap of faith’ and whether there is a sufficient range of suitable growing media blends available to the industry.

The event will include demonstrations of peat-reduced and peat-free trial results in hardy nursery stock and bedding and pot plants.

Presentation topics will include:

  • Understanding the fundamentals: matching the medium to the crop and understanding nutrition, irrigation and leachability in crop production – Bulrush Horticulture
  • Nursery adoption of new growing media, a grower's perspective – Tristram Plants
  • Peat-free media, the manufacturer's perspective – Melcourt Industries

An optional evening dinner is also available, delegates will be e-mailed a menu selection after booking.
