The last few years were among the most successful years for Russia’s greenhouse industry. Over 250 ha of new commercial greenhouses were commissioned, the number of 5-gen greenhouses increased.
Further expansion of greenhouse area is expected – new projects are set to be launched in the Moscow region, Astrakhan, Ingushetia, and many other regions across the country. Maintaining the growth rate will enable complete import substitution by 2020.
Key investment projects
Greenhouse
The company, “Greenhouse”, plans to build a high-tech greenhouse enterprise in the Far East, said principle owner Arkady Abramovich. It is expected that the area of the complex will total 300 hectares under cultivation with another 50 hectares used for a seedling complex and associated services. As one of Abramovich’s representatives clarified to Vedomosti, plans are to raise tomatoes, cucumbers, and sweet peppers. The exact location of the greenhouses is to be determined later. Costs of electricity and other resources necessary for agricultural production in the Russian Far East are lower than in China, and thus the region is attractive for export production, the representative added. Total investment could reach as high as $900 million.
Victoria Estate
Approximately 1 billion rubles have been invested in the creation of a greenhouse complex for the cultivation of strawberries in the Elektrostal region, according to Deputy General Director Vakhtang Sagareishivili of the “Victoria Estate” group of companies.
“In 2019, we will begin planning this project, and by 2020 we expect to begin production”, said Sagareishvili.
He added that the greenhouse complex would be built on 10 hectares in the Elektrostal district.
The representative nevertheless found it difficult to exactly prognose the expected harvest size, noting that this would largely depend on the provider of the cultivation technologies eventually chosen for the complex – Japanese, Korean, or Italian.
Vegetables of Chernozemye (ECO-Culture)
Agricultural concern “Vegetables of Chernozemye” (a part of the “ECO-Culture” group of companies) has received a 1.7 billion ruble loan for the construction of a second-stage greenhouse complex in the Lipetsk region. The investor intends to launch year-round production in the complex, creating 1100 new jobs.
Michurinsky (Greenhouse Growth Technology)
A new greenhouse designed to produce vegetables and green crops is to be built in the Michurinsky district of the Tambov region. Project investment is not less than 28bn RUB. The information was delivered by the regional authorities.
The governor Alexander Nikitin discussed project details with Sergey Rukin, General Director of Greenhouse Growth Technology.
The project provides for the construction of the most advanced greenhouse complex. This will be a greenhouse of a vacuum type with “smart window” technology and LED lighting. The complex called “Michurinsky’ will comprise grading zones, a planting section, and a training centre.
According to Mr. Nikitin, regional authorities are ready to support the project by providing the infrastructure and regional tax preferences.
Podosinki
The third stage of a greenhouse complex for rose cultivation, “Podosinki” in the Moscow region city of Dmitrov is planned for construction over the course of three years, said the company’s General Director Yulia Charyshkina. A corresponding agreement was enacted by the Podosinki company with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Products of the Moscow region.
“The agreement implies that we want to increase our production capacity, and so we plan construction of an additional 6 hectares of space”, noted Charyshkina, explaining that the project would be realized on neighbouring land alongside the existing production area of 9 hectares.
“We expect that the preparation of project documentation will take 1.5 to 2 years, and the construction itself – between nine months to a year”, added Charyshkina.
According to Charyshkina, the addition of a third stage to the complex will allow it to increase production by 60% – to as much as 35 billion flowers per year. Total investment required for the project is approximately 1.7 billion rubles.
To sum up, more than 1500 ha of greenhouses are to be built in Russia by 2020. As practice shows, CEOs of Russian greenhouses prefer equipment manufacturers from the Netherlands, Spain, France, Germany and other European countries, relying on their extensive experience and field expertise. However, nowadays European companies are not sure what will happen in the future, after 2020.
