Dennis Tuk, ViVi:

"We can advise in any crop to be micropropagated in a safe way"

Taking cultivation to the next level - whether it's for a tissue culture laboratory or a multi layer grower system. That's what can be done with ViVi, the growing method developed to grow products in the final packing. Recently turn-key projects at Shandong D&F Agriculture and AgriGarden have been installed and expanded.

Lettuce in a bag
The ViVi method allows growers to grow full young plants or leafy crops in a closed micro perforated bag. During production all the way to the kitchen counter of the customer, no one needs to touch the product. "ViVi can be used both in tissue culture labs as well as micro-, baby and leafy greens growing operations. We can provide growers with a turn-key solution for a complete laboratory for any starting material, including tissue culture, seed and cuttings. And we can also provide them with a tailor-made solution for specific circumstances", Dennis Tuk with ViVi explains.

With the introduction of ViVi a couple of years ago, many responses were given. Skeptics might have believed the system to be too far out on the safety side - a mini-greenhouse created for a singe plant seemed over the top. Nowadays they're proven wrong. "Cultivation in a safe, controlled environment, without infections or diseases has turned out to be a very relevant topic in both commercial production and the area of R&D. With ViVi Verte the cultivation takes place inside the perforated foil, which means the crop grows in a controlled environment within the packaging", Dennis explains. By growing in a plant-specific greenhouse, indoor growing is taken to the next level, he agrees. "That's what we aim for and that's what's realised in the current projects."

Turn-key projects
Shandong D&F Agriculture was ViVi’s very first project back in 2014. After several successful years the seed and seedling breeding enterprise decided to expand their tissue culture lab to fulfill the large market demand. "Following the expansion by ViVi, D&F remains as one of China’s largest producers of fruit trees and sets a high standard in the young plants market", Dennis shows. "D&F will be capable of producing 50 million plants per year from tissue culture after the planned expansion."

Another major development in the field of multi layer growing was the successful delivery of two turn-key plant factories to AgriGarden in Kaiyang and Dongying, China. "We've completed this plant factory with a multi layer climate chamber equipped with LED lighting, automatic media preparators with a specialized ViVi media filling line, and state-of-the-art tissue culture labs."

AgriGarden is born in the heart of CAAS (China Agriculture Academy of Science) and is now market leader of plant factories in China.

Besides the booming Chinese market, ViVi is also actively delivering high standard turn-key solutions in North America. Changes in the market with the use of fewer natural and chemical resources while maintaining production levels led ViVi to see the demand for safe cultivation rising in many countries and in commercial production and the area of R&D.

"Every plant has a specific optimal growing protocol", Dennis continues. "Thanks to our team of plant specialists, it doesn't matter what kind of crop a growers want to work with - we can advise in any crop they want to be micropropagated in a safe way." ViVi offers consultancy for the development of protocols for the plants and once the lab is up and running, ViVi can also provide training and consultancy to ensure a great start and a sustainable production.
