Could a plug replace the traditional soil block?

At Dekker Chrysanten, they are currently investigating the extent to which a plug could be used instead of the traditional soil block used in propagation. "As a company with a keen eye for innovation, we see the investment in a plug-making machine as a great opportunity to give the chrysanthemum sector an extra boost", they say.

"There has been a lot of speculation about our trials with plugs in the propagation process. In theory, a plug can offer advantages such as more uniform growth and flowering, a sturdier stem, and reduced use of plant protection products. A large-scale practical trial should show whether these benefits are actually feasible. This trial is now in progress at our company premises in Hensbroek."
