Novelties Plantarium 2019, part 1

New plants are introduced at Plantarium again this year, having been bred by companies both in the Netherlands and abroad, and are judged by the Royal Boskoop Horticultural Society. This article provides an overview of a number of novelties that will be judged at the show.

Buddleja davidii 'Artbud 1580' (Summer Teens Mats Magic Red)
Buddleja davidii 'Artbud 1580' (Summer Teens Mats Magic Red) is a fine addition to the Summer Teens series. The plant is compact and well-branched. It flowers abundantly with beautiful, bright red panicles from July to September. Just like other varieties from this series, Mats Magic Red grows to a medium height. The plant is low-maintenance, loves a sunny spot and is drought-resistant. Butterflies, bees and bumblebees are especially attracted to the flowers. The beautiful bright colour of the flowers in combination with the good growth characteristics make the plant an eye-catcher in the garden or in a pot on the patio. The plant is protected under plant breeding legislation and was bred by Norbert Artmeyer from Hörstel-Riesenbeck (Germany). Artmeyer Baumschule GmbH & Co. KG from Hörstel-Riesenbeck (Germany) submitted the plant for the novelty showcase and also markets it.

Buddleja davidii 'Pmoore14' (Berries & Cream)
Buddleja davidii 'Pmoore14' (Berries & Cream) is a new introduction from the well-known breeder Peter Moore from Stockbridge (United Kingdom). Berries & Cream has bicoloured cream and purple flowers. It blooms abundantly from June to October. The plant grows to approx. 2 m high and 70 cm wide and is very suitable for landscaping, shrub borders or for on the balcony or patio. Berries & Cream is protected under plant breeding legislation. Boomkwekerij Out vof from Hazerswoude submitted the plant for the novelty showcase. Cercis canadensis 'NCCC1' (Carolina Sweetheart)
Cercis canadensis 'NCCC1' (Carolina Sweetheart) is a new introduction with spectacular variegated foliage. It is the most colourful Cercis there is. The tree blooms with 1.5 cm large purple-pink flowers that appear directly on the bark. In early spring, when it has finished flowering, pink, red and chestnut-brown leaves appear, which later become variegated green and white. In autumn, the foliage is yellow with red and white. The heart-shaped leaves are a true spectacle of colour. Just like other Cercis canadensis cultivars, Carolina Sweetheart is very hardy and with a full-grown height of about 6 metres, it is an excellent tree for gardens. This new cultivar was bred by Thomas G. Ranney from the North Carolina State University, in Raleigh (USA), and is protected under plant breeding legislation. Joh. Stolwijk & Zonen Boomkwekerijen B.V. from Boskoop submitted the plant and also markets it.

Clematis 'Kokonoe'
Clematis 'Kokonoe' is a striking climber with warm purple coloured flowers with a unique shape. 'Kokonoe' produces an abundance of flowers and blooms from late spring to autumn. This climber grows to approx. 2.5 m high and 1 m wide and is lovely as a stand-alone on the patio or balcony and against a wall, fence or pergola, but also in mixed containers or hanging baskets. 'Kokonoe' is protected under plant breeding legislation and was bred by Shigeaki Ochiai from Japan. Marco de Wit Boomkwekerij from Boskoop submitted the plant for the novelty showcase. Clematis 'Zo14100' (Little Lemons)
Clematis 'Zo14100' (Little Lemons) was selected because of its extraordinary dwarf habit, the long flowering period and the end flowers, which produce seed fluff that remains on the plant for a few weeks. In the Netherlands, the flowers mainly attract bees and bumblebees. Clematis Little Lemons produces stems that are 20-30 cm long and sometimes even 50 cm. The foliage is pinnate and green coloured. The yellow flowers are nodding, beautifully bell-shaped and have a diameter of 2-3 cm. After flowering, the shiny seed fluff appears; the side flowers do not usually have seed fluff. Clematis Little Lemons flowers from mid-May to early September. This Clematis is protected under plant breeding legislation and belongs to the Tangutica Group. Cordyline 'Albatross' (Superstar)
Cordyline 'Albatross' (Superstar) is a new Cordyline with dark, purple-red foliage. The leaves are wide and shiny. The plant grows upright to approx. 150 cm high and 80 cm wide. Superstar has a unique shape and colour and gives the garden a tropical touch. The plant is protected under plant breeding legislation and was bred by Gordon Scott from Whenuapai (New Zealand). Boomkwekerij Jochems van Opstal BV from Wernhout submitted the plant for the novelty showcase. Planttip BV from IJsselstein is responsible for the management.

Delphinium elatum 'DD-2011' (Cinderella)
Delphinium elatum 'DD-2011' (Cinderella) is an elegant perennial with flowers that are especially suitable for cutting and on the patio. This Delphinium flowers in summer. The flowers are multi-petalled and pale pink with green tips at the edges and in the heart. Cinderella grows to approx. 1.2 m high and 60 cm wide. Dowdeswell's Delphiniums from Wanganui (New Zealand) bred this plant, which is protected under plant breeding legislation. Kebra vof from Noordwijkerhout submitted the plant for the novelty showcase. Planttip BV from IJsselstein is responsible for the management.

Erysimum 'Dersurng' (Sunstrong Orange)
During the summer months, Erysimum 'Dersurng' (Sunstrong Orange) produces large orange flowers that smell wonderful. This perennial grows in a compact, upright way and has an average growth. The foliage is green coloured. Sunstrong Orange was bred by Gavriel Danziger from Mishmar Hashiva (Israel). Protection under plant breeding legislation has been applied for. Danziger from Mishmar Hashiva (Israel) markets the plant and also submitted it for the novelty showcase.

Escallonia 'Lowat21' (Glowing Embers)
Escallonia 'Lowat21' (Glowing Embers) is a striking plant with foliage that has an array of colours: in spring, the foliage is orange-red, it then turns golden-yellow and then green. The pink flowers add to this array of colours. Glowing Embers is a compact plant that grows to approx. 80 to 100 cm tall. This evergreen shrub deserves a nice spot in the garden, shrub border or on the balcony or patio. Glowing Embers is also very suitable for use as a low hedge. Lowaters Ltd. from Southampton, Hampshire (UK), bred this plant, which is protected under plant breeding legislation. Van den Dool Cultures from Waddinxveen and Firma J.C. Niesing from Boskoop submitted the plant for the novelty showcase. Planttip BV from IJsselstein is responsible for the management.

Hydrangea arborescens 'Golden Annabelle'
Hydrangea arborescens 'Golden Annabelle' is a beautiful addition to the H. arborescens range. 'Golden Annabelle' blooms from July to September with large panicles and flowers in the colour lime green to creamy white. The plant grows to approx. 1.3 m tall and 1 m wide, has green and golden-yellow variegated foliage and strong stems, which make this plant very decorative even when it is not in bloom. Handelskwekerij G. Hoogenraad BV from Ederveen submitted the plant. Planttip BV from IJsselstein is responsible for the management. 'Golden Annabelle' was bred by J.J. Bos from Wilp and is protected under plant breeding legislation.

Hydrangea arborescens 'GRHYAR1406' (Candybelle Marshmallow)
Hydrangea arborescens 'GRHYAR1406' (Candybelle Marshmallow) has large panicles with pale salmon pink flowers. It flowers from July to September. The foliage has a healthy green colour. Candybelle Marshmallow has very sturdy branches and produces a compact growth. The plant grows to approx. 90 cm high and 80 cm wide. Candybelle Marshmallow is protected under plant breeding legislation and was bred by Guido Rouwette from Valkenburg. Vlasveld Tuintechnieken from Boskoop submitted the plant for the novelty showcase. Hydrangea arborescens 'GRHYAR1407' (Candybelle Bubblegum) has large panicles with pink flowers. It flowers from July to September. The foliage has a healthy green colour and bronze hues. Candybelle Bubblegum has very sturdy branches and produces a compact growth. The plant grows to approx. 90 cm high and 80 cm wide. Candybelle Bubblegum is protected under plant breeding legislation and was bred by Guido Rouwette from Valkenburg. Vlasveld Tuintechnieken from Boskoop submitted the plant for the novelty showcase. Hydrangea paniculata 'Frenne' (Skyfall)
Hydrangea paniculata 'Frenne' (Skyfall) is a beautiful hydrangea with extremely large panicles. The panicles are much larger than the similar 'Limelight'. The white flowers turn light pink and have large, hyacinth-like petals. The plant has a strong growth habit and is low-maintenance. Its size, 1.20 m tall and 70 cm wide, makes it ideal as a stand-alone on balconies or patios, for mixed containers or shrub borders, and for mass planting or group planting. The plant was submitted by Handelskwekerij G. Hoogenraad from Ederveen and Vlasveld Tuintechnieken from Boskoop. Planttip BV from IJsselstein is responsible for the management. Skyfall is protected under plant breeding legislation and was bred by Guido Rouwette from Valkenburg.

Hydrangea paniculata 'GRHP08' (Little Spooky) has full, round panicles with white flowers. The plant flowers abundantly in summer. Thanks to its strong, compact dwarf shape, Little Spooky is ideal for pots on the patio or balcony. The plant grows to approximately 50 cm tall and 30 cm wide and is also ideal for use in a mixture of plants in borders or for mass planting. Little Spooky was bred by Guido Rouwette from Valkenburg and is protected under plant breeding legislation. Handelskwekerij G. Hoogenraad from Ederveen and Vlasveld Tuintechnieken from Boskoop submitted the plant for the novelty showcase. Planttip BV from IJsselstein is responsible for the management.

Miscanthus sinensis 'EMPMIS02' (Pink Cloud)
Miscanthus sinensis 'EMPMIS02' (Pink Cloud) has been selected because of its beautiful pink flower plumes. This Miscanthus flowers abundantly, which is emphasised by its compact growth of max. 1 metre tall. Pink Cloud® is low maintenance. The plant is not particular about soil type. It is ideal for use as a hedge of grasses, as a stand-alone on a terrace or patio, for mass planting or in the border. The plant was bred by Empho BV from Berltsum and is protected under plant breeding legislation. Hoogendoorn Holland BV from Wijk en Aalburg and Plantipp BV from IJsselstein submitted the plant for the novelty showcase. Planttip BV from IJsselstein is responsible for the management.

Morus rotundiloba 'Matsunaga' (BonBonBerry Mojo Berry)
Morus rotundiloba 'Matsunaga' (BonBonBerry Mojo Berry) produces fruits on old and new wood for a very long period, lasting from May to September. This in contrast to other varieties, which only produce fruit for a period of three weeks towards the end of summer and only after five or six years. The fruits are excellent for making jam, cakes or other dishes. This compact dwarf variety grows to approximately 1.5 m high (in comparison with normal mulberries that can grow to 6-8 m high), making it suitable for any type of garden. Mojo Berry is beautiful as a stand-alone on the patio but also in borders or mixed containers. The plant is protected under plant breeding legislation and was bred by Hajime Matsunaga from Japan. Az. Agr. Caporalplant from Canosa di Puglia (Italy) submitted the plant for the novelty showcase. Planttip BV from IJsselstein is responsible for the management.

Sedum takesimense 'Nonsitnal' (Atlantis)
Sedum takesimense 'Nonsitnal' (Atlantis) exhibits a fascinating combination of colours: green foliage with cream-coloured edges, pink flower buds, cherry-red leaf buds and yellow flowers in summer. The foliage retains its colour throughout summer and autumn. Atlantis grows densely and remains low, up to 10-15 cm tall and 45 cm wide. It is a beautiful plant for rock gardens, for green roofs, as ground cover or in containers on the patio or balcony. The plant is resistant to heat, drought and moisture and is disease-free. Atlantis is protected under plant breeding legislation and was bred by Hortech Inc. from Spring Lake (USA). Kebra vof from Noordwijkerhout submitted the plant. Skimmia japonica 'Perosa'
Skimmia japonica 'Perosa' is a renewed variegated Skimmia selection with strong characteristics such as healthy roots, no deterioration and dark red flower buds. The plant stands out thanks to the contrast between the flower buds and the foliage. Each leaf has a unique colour, varying from light green to almost silver. The flower buds are deep red and appear on the plant from August. In autumn and winter especially, 'Perosa' is a beautiful eye-catcher in the garden. It is a hardy cultivar and when winter sets in, the pale yellow edge of the leaves changes to autumn red. Perry van Eijk Skimmias from Boskoop submitted the plant and placed it on the market with Snepvangers Tuinplanten from Molenschot. The variety is managed by Van Vliet New Plants from Stroe. Ton van Eijk from Boskoop bred the plant. 'Perosa' is protected under plant breeding legislation.

Weigela 'TVP2' (Picobella Rosa)
Weigela 'TVP2' (Picobella Rosa) produces abundant pink flowers in the blooming period, which is from May to October. The plant stays very compact and grows to approx. 40 cm tall and 60 cm wide. This Weigela has very delicate leaves and is low-maintenance: it can be pruned but this is not essential. Picobella Rosa was bred by Bert Verhoef from Hazerswoude-Dorp and is protected under plant breeding legislation. Boomkwekerij Robert Rijnbeek and Joh. Stolwijk & Zn. BV, both from Boskoop, submitted the plant for the novelty showcase. Planttip BV from IJsselstein is responsible for the management.
