Turkey: Organized greenhouse production zone for ornamental plants in Edremit will generate revenue of 25m USD annually

The efforts to set up an organized ornamental plant greenhouse production zone in Edremit district of Balikesir continue at full speed. Located in northwestern Turkey, Balikesir has close proximity to Istanbul, one of the most important domestic markets in the country. The project is carried out by Balikesir Governorship in cooperation with Balikesir municipality, Edremit district municipality, and chambers of agriculture and commerce.

At the first phase of the project, 30 greenhouses will be built in an area of 75 hectares. The project is estimated to create 1,500 jobs and generate an annual revenue of 20 million USD to the regional economy. The ornamental plants grown in these greenhouses will be marketed and sold to both domestic and export markets.

Speaking to the press, AK Party Balikesir Senator Mustafa Canbey: “We are currently finishing up the infrastructure works in the area. Hopefully, our growers will be able to start production next year. The project is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and will hopefully create many jobs for people in the area. We believe that once this project is completed, it will add a lot of value to the regional and national economy.”
