With the construction of a new foil greenhouse Köder Gartenbau in Jagstzell, Germany has doubled the size of its ornamental plants production area. This new greenhouse was custom made to be used for multiple purposes. “We can both produce young plants in spring and grow finished plants in the fall, and we also use the greenhouse for contract production”, says Johannes Köder. The total acreage of Köder Gartenbau is 2 hectares.
Foil construction
Although the existing greenhouse is made of glass, for this new 1.2 hectare greenhouse, Köder chose a foil construction. “Foil covering offers considerable advantages for many of our crops, regarding colouring, reduced length growth and hardening of the plants, to name just a few.” Due to the altitude of over 500m above sea level, Köder Gartenbau benefits from many hours of sunshine. “The colors of the flowers are significantly more pronounced than comparable products from the lower layers”, they say. “In order to obtain the optimal conditions for growth, we work with 6 different climate zones.”
Saving energy
“Control-wise, the design of the greenhouse leaves nothing to be desired with the possibility for use as a hothouse or as a coldhouse (with almost field-like conditions), as well as saving energy.“
Withstand snow load
The greenhouse with all of its technique was supplied by Vermako. “I think they distinguished itself from other contractors by fully integrating our requirements into the construction of the greenhouse”, says Johannes. “It needs to withstand an increased snow load, it features a dispatch area with sandwich panels and a cultivated plants section with special roofing, in which we created our office space.
