Calcium product introduced in Kenya for improved vaselife

At an event in Nakuru, Kenya, several growers, breeders and industry players got together, including Fontana, Bliss, Rosetto, United Selections, Expressions’s, Kimman, Black Tulip group, Mzurrie and Sian. The reason? To get to know more about the role of calcium in plant nutrition.

Organized by Cosmocel and Ocean Agriculture, the event showcased the company's products, with a specific focus on Mainstay Calcium. According to Edward Agg-Manning of Ocean Agriculture, the product offers rose production in the region several benefits. "It is a plant available calcium source, that improves crop physiology, increases crop resistance on fungal-borne threats and improves vase life among other attributes. The application recommended is through drench at typically 2 liter/ha."

Calcium benefits for the plant
Edward explains that calcium is the most important nutrient in resistance metabolic system, acting like a second messenger in the resistance process in plants.

"Calcium is needed by the plant in residual or extracellular form to act like a second messenger and to promote resistance and metabolic processes", Edward says.

He concludes that Mainstay Calcium has two key benefits for crops: "The product results in improved plant and crop quality, and provides high calcium uptake with no chloride, sulfate or nitrate".
