Floating treatment wetlands for nitrogen and phosphorus removal in runoff

Few studies have been conducted that evaluate floating treatment wetlands (FTW) for treating container nursery runoff. The need for best management practices to reduce nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in agricultural runoff is acute, especially in regions with nutrient load limitations such as the Chesapeake Bay watershed. FTW performance in reducing N and P in runoff from commercial nurseries was evaluated in two, 8-week trials using replicated mesocosm experiments, with five monoculture species, alone and in mixtures.
