Smiling faces at Cactus van der Meer in Honsersdijk this week. The grower has expanded his acreage with 1 hectare, making a total of 2.5 hectare for growing cactus. Jeroen van der Meer: "It was an opportunity just popping up, and even within a range of 400 meter, that is unique. I can keep doing everything by bike".
Cactus van der Meer started with 0.5 hectare and expanded with one hectare in 2017. "You have to keep filling the orders, and the orders are getting bigger and bigger", according Jeroen, who is also renting around 4000 square meter greenhouse. He has to wait and see if he is going to continue that.
Monday, in between the photo moment with realtor Vollebregt Barten, the filling of the greenhouse at the Middel Broekweg 93 was started. "We need a month to do this, and then it is a matter of controlling to start production in two years."
That is, if everything goes according to plan. If it is really too warm, even a cactus can take longer. "Growing cactus is just not something you do. You have to know how. Fortunately, my grandpa and my father have done great preliminary work for forty years and I have been blessed to be able to continue this with my sister Mirjam."
