The quest for the white poinsettia

Each November, the week before Thanksgiving, Millstadt Young Plants in Millstadt, Illinois (near St. Louis), hosts the most extensive poinsettia comparison trial and open house. Parent company, N.G. Heimos Greenhouses, is one of the leading finished plant suppliers for supermarkets and major retailers, including Walmart. The open house is an opportunity to see the latest in festive plant packaging. Plus, Andrew Lee from the Fred C. Gloeckner Co. demonstrates how to add bling to poinsettias with a variety of paints and glitters.

Most of the buzz this year revolved around a few of the white varieties being introduced. This was a great place to see the full range of colors side by side. Typical white varieties have a yellowish cast, but they are brightening to an ivory. In this update from the road, Suntory highlights some of their favorite varieties.
