June 1-17, 2019

IFTEX, FlowerTrials, Syngenta acquires Varinova, Beekenkamp wins FleuroStar and more...

For many years, the first half of June consists of the IFTEX in Nairobi, Kenya, and the FlowerTrials in the Netherlands and Germany. At this year's IFTEX, it became clear that the Kenyan rose growers have had a challenging year so far and that many are trying their luck in bouquets. At the FlowerTrials, we noticed two trends. Firstly, there seem to have been an emphasis on the compactness of a variety. Growers want to reduce the use of PGRs for varieties that usually need it. They, therefore, are looking for improved ones. At the same time, everything needs to be more compact, they say, as people's gardens are becoming smaller.

But more happened the first part of June 2019, Syngenta Flowers acquires Dutch cyclamen breeding company Varinova, IFTEX, Beekenkamp wins FleuroStar 2019, and Meilland launches novelty Zepeti. Also, Jan Willem Wieringa of Desch Plantpak compared plastic to dog poop.

Below the complete overview of what happened between June 1-17, 2019.
