There is still time to apply for 2020 Masterclass in Horticultural Business, with applications closing at midnight on Friday, 17 January. This year there will be five places for the nursery industry.
Delivered by the University of Tasmania (UTAS), the Hort Masterclass is a ten-month course undertaken predominantly online, offering a comprehensive and accessible program to those looking to accelerate their careers in the horticultural sector.
With funding from Hort Innovation’s Hort Frontiers fund and additional contributions from the Australian Government, this initiative is the first of its kind in Australia, working to equip those in the nursery industry with leadership and business management skills specific to the horticultural sector.
The Masterclass is based around the development of each student’s personal business plan. Upon completion of the program, students present their business plan to a panel of experts from both the education and professional sector. The course is designed to be tailored directly to students’ individual needs and ambitions. Past students’ plans have ranged from change management plans, specific commercial innovations, roadmaps to better develop an existing business’ potential, or even new business start-ups.
As students develop this plan, they explore a range of business-oriented topics via a flexible online structure, covering several key modules such as people and culture, innovation and entrepreneurship, and supply chain management and logistics. There are also several face-to-face weekend workshops and on-farm experiences where you can learn from some of the very best in the business, with many of Australia’s current industry leaders involved in the program.
The Hort Masterclass brings together students within the nursery industry and across the broader horticultural sector, working to find solutions to shared challenges.
Term 1 of the 2020 course will commence on Monday, 10 February, with the first face-to-face happening from 14 – 15 February in the Mornington Peninsula.
Upon completion of the course, students will receive a Diploma in Horticultural Business from the University of Tasmania. Students are not required to have previous academic or education qualifications and are accepted based only on their professional aptitude.
