A lot has happened in 2019 in the field of water quality. Not only are the water sources around the greenhouse horticultural companies becoming cleaner, but the irrigation water as well is getting more attention. And the attention given to irrigation water is well deserved, according to the people at Agrozone.

"We are looking back on a year in which the bar has been raised. Seeing as water is no longer allowed to simply be disposed of. Because of this, there have been a lot of growers who aim to keep the water within their company as clean as possible. Besides a decrease in the loss of fertilizers, this also resulted in healthier plants leading to a better harvest.”
Open field cultivations
2019 was also the year in which, in the field of open field cultivations, like for chrysanthemum, a lot of work was done. It has also been proven that water that runs through hundreds of liters of soil per square meter can safely be reused, according to Agrozone. Other cultivations in which the reusage of water seemed possible, such as orchids, were also met with success in their cultivation and with the saving on fertilizers.
Propagation companies have also been getting a lot of attention in terms of their water quality this year, Agrozone adds when looking back on the year. “With ebb/flood- systems, a high volume of water is moved around the cultivation companies. This also means that a high volume of water needs to be treated. Attention to the water quality in these systems also brings out great results in terms of the cultivation quality. A good start for the plant is essential to a good cultivation year.”

Dirt prevents oxygen flow
It has been a year with a lot of attention for the oxygen level in the irrigation water, especially in vegetable cultivations. “This year, together with the growers, we looked for the reason behind the sometimes low oxygen level. As it turned out: polluted places within a water system prevent the flow of oxygen, causing the water that reaches the plant to be low in oxygen.”
This is where Agrozone, together with the growers, got to work. “Not only to add oxygen but take care of what is causing the problem as well. For growers, both domestic and abroad, we mapped out the entire water system and then managed to improve the water quality.” With an eye on the future, Agrozone, together with partners, has also been looking at solutions for other water systems.
Agrozone is looking forward to further collaboration with growers, cultivation advisors, installers, and suppliers in 2020 in order to solve the challenges of tomorrow.
