US (MI): Irrigation update for specialty crop producers

Vegetable, fruit and specialty growers in southwest Michigan and northwest Indiana may want to take advantage of a Specialty Crop Irrigation Meeting on March 17, 2020, at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center, 1791 Hillandale Rd. Benton Harbor, MI 49022. The meeting will run from 9 a.m. to noon and will be beneficial to overhead and drip irrigators alike.

Presenter Phil Ausra of Trickl-Eez Irrigation Inc. will talk the group through the irrigation design process from bare land to a production field ready to irrigate.

Younsuk Dong of Michigan State University’s Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering will cover irrigation scheduling and using soil moisture monitoring equipment to maximize water efficiency, increase quality and yield.

Lyndon Kelley, irrigation specialist for MSU Extension and Purdue Extension, will discuss using irrigation for fertilizer and chemical application, in addition to Michigan water rights, rules and regulations.
