Olaf Amende, WEBER Verpackungen:

"Bloom guard mixed paper packaging upholds sustainable presentation of flowers in water”

German producer WEBER Verpackungen has made a name for himself worldwide with the bloom guard packaging concept within the lettuce, herb and flower market. These bloom guard covers consist of FSC-certified paper and are therefore 100% recyclable. The packaging is produced from reinforced, water-resistant paper. This week, the company presents a new product for the floriculture market: the bloom guard mixed-paper packaging.

“Most paper flower covers consist of striped, brown Kraft paper. However, when flowers are left in the water for some time, the package softens with the risk of tearing. That’s why we have now introduced a new packaging that combines the striped Kraft paper with an underlayer of 5-7% wet-strength paper," says packaging consultant Olaf Amende. "We have added a new paper combination as an alternative option to our selection through an intelligent technical adaptation. In this way we combine the best of both worlds. We retain an affordable durable paper cover with an optimum presentation."

It is more than clear that sustainability is the future for floriculture packaging, according to Olaf. "Every grower is looking for alternatives to their current packaging. In the organic herb sector, paper packaging has even become a requirement and we believe that the floriculture market is also moving in this direction," adds Thomas Leithe. "Although the price is admittedly different from plastic packaging, it is by all means acceptable and you can market it differently thanks to the sustainable look and feel, making a difference. Of course, you can also work with 100% wet-strength paper, but by combining both materials, you come out a lot more economical price-wise."

The packaging can be developed entirely according to customer specifications and printed in all possible sizes, shapes and 10 different colours. "We develop our technology and machines in-house and can therefore present unique solutions. For the past year, we have been developing this new, combined packaging and it will be launched worldwide this week. We expect this to attract much interest from the floriculture market. We retain the durable look of a paper cover, only it remains strong in the water!”

According to Olaf, a major plus of the WEBER Verpackungen packages is that all products are developed and produced just across the border in the German town of Wickede on the Ruhr. "Our company therefore has 130 years of experience in developing and supplying flexible packaging of reliable German quality. This sets us apart from many colleagues who import their products with long lead times from the Far East. Particularly in these unusual times, core values such as speed, quality, flexibility, as well as innovative strength and low emissions are essential to remaining successful in business."
