Italy: investment in regenerated plastic plant pots

The private equity Entangled Capital announces the second investment operation of the EC I Fund, namely 73% of Nuova Pasquini & Bini, a company from Altopascio in the province of Lucca, active in the design and production of regenerated plastic pots for the production of plants and for the furnishing of green spaces.

NP&B was founded in the 1960s and in 1998 was acquired by the Checchi and Silvi families who immediately took care of the industrial growth of the company, contributing to development, innovation and presence on the international market. Today the Checchi and Silvi families have decided to re-invest 27% maintaining their important presence within the company, and supporting the EC I Fund in the path of growth and strengthening of the company's presence on the market, especially international.

Despite the periods of forced closure due to the Covid emergency, Nuova Pasquini & Bini achieved, in 2020, a total turnover of approximately 22 million - an increase compared to 2019 - with an excellent profit, approximately 20%, and more than 40 employees.

Growth abroad and m & a
"What impressed us about the company,"  said Roberto Giudici, CEO of Entangled Capital, "are its strengths. First of all, the use of regenerated plastic, that is, the material deriving from of the plastic recycling process, used for example for bitumen or asphalt and which represents about 40% of virgin plastic recycled in Italy ". This is used "to produce pots and sold on the B2B market to growers of plants destined for large spaces or direct sellers, a market that is booming because it is sustainable and useful for reducing CO2 emissions".

With about 10 thousand tons of plastic moulded in a year, of which 80% is recycled and regenerated plastic, Nuova Pasquini & Bini produces over 22,000,000 pots for more than 4,000 customers worldwide. "The company - adds Giudici - achieves over 50% of its turnover outside Italy in countries including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Spain, Holland, Germany, United Kingdom and especially North America, one of the largest markets in the world and where this year the company is doubling its turnover ”. Precisely in North America "we aim to grow the company".

The production capacity and the breadth of the catalog, together with the research and development activity, are the other strengths of the company. NPB internally develops the design and deals with the moulding of particular pots such as those specialized for hydroponic cultivation or made with biocomposite compounds, with a high content of biobased materials and from renewable sources, developed in collaboration with the Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering of the 'University of Pisa. The main product of the company is represented by the pots of the NPB injection line, produced with highly technological and totally robotized machinery which use regenerated and quality materials and that guarantee a high seal even in climatic conditions that alternate different temperatures on the same day.

The company has "an excellent margin and excellent growth prospects to consolidate its leadership, in Italy and in Europe", observes Giudici, "and the goal is to double or almost double its turnover in the next five years".
