“Especially in floriculture, there will always be many challenges when it comes to logistics,” says Alex Cano, President of South Florida Transit, a perishable logistics service in Florida. In a recent live stream with New Bloom Solutions, host Sahid Nahim and Alex Cano discuss the ever existing logistical issues, and how Cano’s company aims to resolve them locally.
Delays, inspections and lack of drivers
Cano explains that logistics issues, while much worse during the pandemic, are always a challenge, especially in floriculture. “Even now that companies are opening back up and events, such as weddings, are happening again, there are still logistic struggles. There will always be things that are out of our control that pose challenges. For example, South American exports being disrupted, other delivery hold-ups. And in Miami, the USDA inspecting flowers might result in some delays as well. Yet the delivery trucks have schedules they need to stick to. If an order is stuck at the USDA, that truck cannot wait.” Cano explains that it is also a struggle to find drivers for floriculture specifically. “When dealing with perishables you cannot use the typical driver, you need to find capable drivers that can handle the perishables with care.”
Finding the solution
For local companies in Florida, Cano’s company aims to pose a solution. “We started our delivery service a year ago in the peak of the pandemic, when a lot of retailers were not even in business. Only a handful of people were still running their business and needed to get flower deliveries done, and we provided that solution for them. Ever since, South Florida Transit has grown exponentially. When a company has freight coming into South Florida, we will obtain that cargo and deliver it to the company’s facility the same night. That way the perishables are ready when the employees arrive the next morning.”
