The dahlia used to be a bit of an old-fashioned flower, but several aspects have been improving the flower’s image, according to Marlies Weijers and Linda van der Slot, founders of FAM Flower Farm. They mainly grow dahlia tubers, tulip bulbs, and narcissus at their flower farm in Lisse, The Netherlands. And the dahlias are selling exceptionally well. “At the moment, dahlias are in higher demand than ever before, and not just for events but for consumers’ gardens as well.”
Social media
According to Weijers and Van der Slot, social media is one of the major aspects increasing the dahlia’s popularity. “Especially these past three years, we notice that the dahlias are taking over social media. The flower is perfect for beautiful photography as there is a wide range of colors and shapes. I think that diversity is the power of the dahlia, and that is why the flower is great on social accounts.”
Dahlia Café au Lait
“Breeding has done its job”
In addition to social media, the breeding companies have added to the increasing interest in dahlias as well. “Over the years, there have been so many new dahlia varieties introduced. Now, there is a wide range of colors and shapes available. This makes it a much more interesting flower for consumers, as they can decorate their gardens according to their own personal taste. There is sure to be a color and shape available to everyone’s liking. There are currently dahlia orders two years in advance, which is something we have never seen before.”
Dahlia Jowey Winnie
The most popular dahlias
At their flower farm, there are a couple of dahlias that are stealing the show. “One of our most popular dahlias is the ‘Café au Lait’, which is often used for events. In addition, we notice that the Jowey line is attracting many people in the fields for photos, as the colors are really eye-catching.” In order to keep up with the popularity, FAM Flower Farm is currently working on adding more dahlia mixes to their assortment to make it easier to choose combinations. “The dahlia webshop will open again as of January 1, and the tulip bulbs and narcissus bulbs can be bought now. FAM Flower Farm is open for wholesale requests too.”
