The benefits of coco coir in hydroponics

In a hydroponic system, a grower does not use traditional media. Instead, other media are employed to provide a safe and secure growing area for plant roots. Of these media, one of the most popular is coco coir, which offers many benefits that make this media a go-to for the majority of all growers in the hydroponic business.

Coco coir is a natural fibrous material that is found on the insides of coconut shells and is often used in the place of peat moss to aerate the soil or in hydroponic systems. Coir is an eco-friendly option to grow crops, and when combined with coco pith and coco fibers, the material proves to have excellent water retention and oxygen flow.

With higher yields and quicker harvests, coco coir makes crop production a breeze compared to traditional methods of cultivation. With the loose nature of the media, roots have plenty of space and can truly stretch out and have more room for water and nutrient absorption, and stability for the plant. The media is generally regarded as pH neutral, having a pH in the range of 5.2-6.8. Coco coir is also known to reduce pathogens and weed growth and reduces the risk for damaging pests in a grow operation.
