Guatemalan flower farm wins award

Last month, Jardines Mil Flores, one of Syngenta's three flowers seeds production sites in Guatemala, was awarded the Clean Field Award. Its outstanding management of empty phytosanitary containers and for replicating actions to make agricultural production sustainable made the company this year’s winner in the Private Enterprise category. Vice-minister of Agriculture Víctor Hugo Guzmán and Vice-president of Agrequima Carlos Torres (Syngenta CU LAN) handed over the award.

The Clean Field Award is part of the Clean Field Program (Campo Limpio) of Agrequima. It was presented for the first time in 2019 as part of the activities to celebrate 20 years of the Clean Field Program. It recognizes the joint work of different organizations and companies that work in the agricultural sector in a responsible way and is awarded in three different categories;
- Organizations (NGOs, foundations, municipalities, etc.),
- Private Enterprises
- Private Enterprise with Small Farmers Suppliers

Agrequima was founded in 1991 and its mission is to promote the association of different sectors to develop agriculture. The company does this in a productive and sustainable way through education, communication, recollection, recycling and legal, regulatory, commercial programs. Another aspect of the mission is to efficiently manage and dispose chemicals and containers and therewith contribute to environmental friendly and sustainable techniques.

Jardines Mil Flores is one of Syngenta Flowers three seed production sites in Guatemala. The site produces Begonia, Impatiens walleriana, Petunia, and some other crops for the global market. The main objective is to properly and harmoniously manage all chemicals, physical, mechanical, cultural, and biological measures.

The company’s best techniques include chemicals’ reception and storage, triple rinsing of containers, and environmentally friendly actions such as a physical-chemical treatment plant and reforestation programs. Furthermore, the company looks after its staff wellbeing by offering training, dental services, daycare, and more. Jardines Mil Flores has been working in the Agrequima Clean Field Program since 2011.

‘’The recognition represents the consolidation of work of our team to care for the environment’’ says Saúl Hernández, agronomist and coordinator of the cultivation department. Jardines Mil Flores celebrated the award with the staff that contributes to the process on a daily basis.
