Proven Winners Calycanthus earns Green Thumb Award

The National Garden Bureau has released its choices for the 2022 Green Thumb Awards, and Proven Winners ColorChoice Simply Scentsational Calycanthus has been named winner of the shrub category.

Formerly managed by The Direct Gardening Association, the Green Thumb Awards are now sponsored by the National Garden Bureau, a nonprofit organization that exists to educate and inspire home gardeners.

Calycanthus Simply Scentsational

Plants and products are evaluated by an independent panel of National Garden Bureau members who are garden writers, breeders, retailers, brokers, and growers. Winners are selected based on their uniqueness, technological innovation, ability to solve a gardening problem or provide a gardening opportunity, and potential appeal to gardeners.

Simply Scentsational Calycanthus was selected and refined over an 18-year period by Spring Meadow’s product development manager, Tim Wood. The blooms of this North American native are an intriguing deep maroon and appear in abundance through late spring and summer. The blooms are powerfully fragrant with hints of pineapple and bubblegum. Simply Scentsational sweetshrub is hardy in USDA zones 4 – 9 and will reach heights of 6' and widths of 4 - 5'. This win follows the 2019 awards for Spring Meadow Nursery's Proven Winners ColorChoice Illuminati Tower Philadelphus and Peppy Le Pom Punica, and the 2018 Green Thumb Award for Invincibelle Wee White Hydrangea arborescens.
