NL: Record turnover of €7.3 billion for flower and plant exports in 2021

Dutch flower and plant exports close 2021 with a new record of no less than 7.3 billion euros. This is announced by the VGB based on the export statistics of Floridata. The export value of cut flowers increased by 25% to 4.4 billion euros. For plants, the export value increased by 17% to 2.9 billion euros.

"We are proud that we as a sector have reached this milestone, although the cause of this growth lies mainly in the higher purchase prices of products. Traders also have to deal with high transport costs and staff shortages," states Matthijs Mesken, director of the VGB. "For this year, we see a number of new concerns coming our way."

"We are keeping a close eye on the tensions between Russia and the West, as well as the developments surrounding Covid and Brexit and the tightened phytosanitary requirements that accompany them. In the run-up to the important flower days, we hope that the scarcity of products does not increase further, as a result of high gas prices that make some growers decide not to heat their greenhouses. It promises to be another exciting year and we, as the floriculture sector, are looking forward to making consumers happy with our beautiful products again this year," Mesken says.
