What are brand guidelines? Brand guidelines are clearly defined rules and standards that communicate how your brand should be represented to the world. Brand guidelines help your business demonstrate consistency and define what your company is, what you do, and what you stand for.
While brand colors, logo design, and taglines are no doubt crucial aspects of any brand, they mean nothing without brand guidelines. Brand guidelines include elements you want to use across all platforms to give your brand a cohesive and memorable feel. Using different fonts, colors, logos, imagery, and interchanging the “voice” used in your materials can make your brand seem unreliable and make it hard for customers to identify with you. Imagine your logo has one set of colors that differ from the color scheme used on every piece of marketing material your company puts out. Not only are you making your brand hard to recognize, but you are confusing your customers.
While visual aspects are important when developing brand guidelines, they are just a small part of what developing your brand is. Good guidelines are a resource to help every member of your team understand how to best represent your brand, but those guidelines should be centered around who and what your brand is. Ask yourself this question, what is our brand’s purpose? If you can answer that question, we can do the rest.
