The next big trend in houseplants? Color, color, and more color

Houseplants have made a huge comeback in the past few years as younger gardeners, in particular, see themselves as “plant parents,” caring for botanical offspring. The next new horizon is moving beyond the green basics into houseplant choices that deliver vibrant indoor color.

“I feel that flowering houseplants are going to be the next big trend in houseplants,” says Lisa Steinkopf, the writer/influencer behind The Houseplant Guru blog. “There are definitely people out there looking for more than just all green or even variegated plants. They want flowers and color.”

Katie Rotella, the spokesperson for the Ball Horticultural Co., one of the nation’s biggest plant growers, sees the same. She identifies one of gardening’s hottest trends of 2023 as “indoor flowers instead of just leafy foliage houseplants.” “Plant parents are starting to bring potted flowering plants into their ‘jungalos,’” she says.

Steinkopf adds that this movement includes more colorful foliage and even houseplant fragrances in addition to growing interest in indoor blooms.
“The young people who are really loving plants right now are always on to the next thing,” says Steinkopf, author of the new book “Bloom: The Secrets of Growing Flowering Houseplants Year-Round.” “Flowering houseplants have a mystique about them – mostly that they are harder to grow and flower. It represents a challenge.”
