“We were looking for a white rose that can produce a big headsize at our location, and we found it,” says Ghanshyam Dusang, General Manager at Everflora Limited, when talking about Pegasso, a premium rose for lower altitudes of Continental Breeding. “We are very pleased with the decision to plant it. It has a good production, stem length, and our clients are very happy with the head size and vase life.”

One of the oldest farms in Kenya
Established in 1995, Everflora Limited is one of the oldest farms in Kenya, located in the Juja area, 40km from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. They grow all their roses hydroponically at an altitude of 1700 meters on 38ha, which soon will be 40ha as they are currently expanding. ‘Pure expression of love’ is their brand name. They mainly supply the Dutch auction but are also making some direct sales all over Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and so on.
Why Pegasso?
Pegasso is a variety of the Spanish rose breeding company ”Continental Breeding.” Introduced in 2017, Dusang started to trial the variety in 2020, and after good results, he decided to plant it. So, in August 2021, he commenced 0.5ha to the cultivation of this variety. “It had a 6cm head size with a nice presentable shape and a super stem length ranging from 62cm to 82cm. And this is something I was looking for. Additionally, the vase life is 14 days, and stems are not very thick, which helps to have more pack rate in a box. As all whites are sensitive to petal damages, we have to be a bit careful about handling it, but our clients are very happy with it.” At the auction, they are selling it with a head size of 5.5cm and 6cm, and on the direct market, they mainly go to the Middle East.
