Hobby growing into a serious business: Duyvesteyn Plants

Duyvesteyn Plants is gower of the month January at OZ Planten.  Patrick Duyvesteyn owns the green plant nursery that bears his own surname. The promise of the nursery? 'We grow your green air.' Indeed, beautiful air-purifying Dracaena of the highest quality leave the nursery all year round. In addition to Dracaena, Duyvesteyn Plants grows beautiful types of Yucca and Beaucarnea of the same top quality. Patrick: "The most important thing for me is that there is continuity of the highest quality of all the plants we supply. And that already starts with the selection of the plant material in Central America."

Where it all began
In the 1970s, Patrick's father, who was a tomato grower, started to set up a number of strains of Dracaena from Africa. As a hobby! And as it goes with hobbies, it grew into a serious business. Duyvesteyn is now an established name in the top segment of large green plants.

Born in Costa Rica
The cultivation of Dracaena starts in Central America, Duyvesteyn mainly buys plant material from Costa Rica. The weather conditions in Costa Rica are perfect: the combination of the humidity, the mountain climate, and the heat ensures an ideal plant start. Patrick can also be found regularly on the farms in Costa Rica to select the most beautiful varieties. "I pay close attention to the quality of the plants, whether the fertilization schedule is followed and whether there are still special species to be found."

Wide range
The relatively small cultivation area of 1.6 ha consists of a wide range of plants. All are laid out neatly and clearly. Many striking varieties can be found in the greenhouse. For example, the Dracaena' Cintho Lemon' is exclusive due to its leaf color and mega-strong properties. "A real asset to the Duyvesteyn Plants range."
