What began as a way to honor his grandfather grew into a full-blown business, but now Jim Balek has to call it quits and close Balek’s Greenhouse due to supply shortages.
Balek was just 17 years old when he began the greenhouse — a memory he remembers as bittersweet.
“I thought the world of my grandfather,” Balek said. “I worked with him in this little greenhouse that he had … I figured, once I graduated, we would be able to do things together.”
Before he could graduate, though, Balek’s grandfather passed away due to blood poisoning, rendering the dream impossible until he had an idea.
“I got it in my mind at that time, I was going to carry on his dream and get it to where we’re at,” Balek said. “I figured we’d make a name for ourselves so that when they hear our name in Corry, they’ll connect us to the greenhouse.
