Ecuador is well known for its roses and other field flowers, but not for its hydrangeas. Therefore Jaime Ruiz of Arvi farms, as part of Groflowers, is very pleased with their Ecuadorian-grown hydrangea. "And on top of its large head, it is pink!"

Experience in growing hydrangeas
Arvi Farms has been growing hydrangeas in Colombia for 10 years in Medellin, Colombia, and was even Colombia's champion at Proflora 2019.
One year ago, Arvi Farms opened its doors in Quito, Ecuador, as they decided to start a new production of pink, hot pink, and red hydrangeas in Ecuador. "Currently, we grow them on one hectare of land, and we have plans to increase to 5ha.
And as in Arvi Colombia, they work in a sustainable approach to agriculture. "Especially with the production of our own bio-pesticides and insecticides that allow us to significantly reduce the use of chemical pesticides."
Pink
"Natural pink hydrangeas are in short supply as they are difficult to get", he explains. "From what I know, in South America, there are just no more than two growers growing naturally colored hydrangeas other than white, green, and blue. Most pink and hot pink hydrangea production is seasonal depending if the grower is in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere, but in Ecuador, we can provide a year-round production. This particular pink hydrangea we grow has a large head and a splash of true pink over white."
Demand
The demand for natural pink hydrangeas is strong, he says. "We just high Valentine's Day with a nice production of pink hydrangeas."

Increase production and markets
Ruiz explains that they are currently exporting mainly to the US, but as the farm grows, they intend to service other markets too. "We see plenty of opportunities to grow in this market of pink, magenta, and red hydrangeas."
