Hundreds of family-owned, family-operated small independent businesses, if not more than a thousand, can be found in Door County. However, it may be hard to find one that's been owned and operated by the same family for 65 years.
Like Werkheiser's Green Acres, a father-and-son-run greenhouse a couple miles south of Egg Harbor that is holding a 65th anniversary celebration for their customers and the community this weekend.
The celebration features a hot dogs-and-chips cookout from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, then a way for children to scratch an item off their Mother's Day shopping lists Sunday. Children who visit that day will get a free, small potted plant, and they can decorate the pot at the greenhouse before giving it to their mothers the following Sunday (available until supplies run out).
The business has had just two generations of owners − Arthur Werkheiser and his wife, Milda, followed by their son Lynn, Sr., and his wife, Darla. Lynn, Sr., continues to own the business (Darla died in 2020) and a third generation, Lynn Werkheiser II, is the only person besides Lynn, Sr., who could be called a staff member, although other family members volunteer their help when possible.
