A workshop:

Growing media for ornamental crops

During this workshop, there will be a demonstration and technical discussion on the current crop project. This project investigates the use of peat-free growing media in containerized ornamental plant production at the Horticulture Centre in Greenmount.

The workshop will include a crop walk to see the performance of herbaceous perennials in both peat-free and peat-reduced growing media. The project includes two different container sizes, 2L & 3L, and two different environments, polytunnel and outside.

Along with the main crop project, there will be a demonstration and technical discussion on an additional, smaller investigative crop project which compares the performance of a single species grown in peat, peat-reduced, and peat-free media, in various container sizes with drip irrigation and the assistance of moisture sensors and water usage meters.

There will be presentations on the project’s findings and observations.

Representatives from Jiffy Growing Media will be in attendance to share case studies from their trial work with nurseries and provide feedback on the project at Greenmount.

To reserve a place in this workshop, contact Conor Gallinagh by email at conor.gallinagh@daera-ni.gov.uk or by mobile at 07919695676.
