Dutch king honored with sustainable flowers

Yesterday, on the third Tuesday of September, 'Prinsjesdag' was celebrated in the Netherlands. As usual, King Willem-Alexander delivered his Speech from the throne (similar to the annual State of the Union). This offered the Dutch flower sector another PR moment. The throne, which was moved to the Royal Theater - the Knights' Hall is being renovated - was, again, decorated for the event; this time by Bloemenmeisjes.com.

It is the third consecutive year that Bloemenmeisjes.com's founder, Natalia Hoogenraad, and her team provided the floral arrangements for this auspicious occasion. "We use only sustainable flowers, no floral foam, and the flowers are reused after the ceremony," she says.

That should even meet the PvdA/Groenlinks coalition's approval. For 'the climate's sake and cost considerations, they no longer want red roses to be handed out. "By sustainable, we mean at least 'from here' (read, not flown in from faraway countries). And also as circular as possible, in the sense that we don't throw anything away. The flowers are all in water and, as mentioned, will get a second life. They'll go to a care organization, where they'll be used for flower arranging workshops," Natalia concludes.
