NL: Peat-free is increasingly becoming the standard at SV.CO

From now until week 51, SV.CO will deliver over 2.5 million mini poinsettias. What's special this year is that these have been grown partially peat-free. "This already went very well with the 10.5 cm last year, and we are now supplying them 100% peat-free. Next year, we hope to deliver the minis all peat-free as well."

We spoke to marketing manager Mike Broch on site and took a tour of the greenhouse. The Poinsettia 10.5 cm and the Poinsettia 'XXL-Flower' 10.5 cm are completely peat-free this year. For the mini Christmas stars, which also include the Princettias and Winterrose, experiments with peat-free potting soil are currently being conducted, and the first results look promising. ''The rooting of the minis is done externally, we are now looking at whether we can go to peat-free solutions together with partners in cultivation."

The result: 6 cm on peat-free substrate

And there is more news to share. As of this delivery season, a new tray has been designed to transport 25% more plants per cart. "Transport prices for our customers are rising, and therefore the best possible load factor is very important. We have therefore developed a more efficient tray, of which 5 instead of 4 go on a layer. So that's 25% more product per Danish trolley. It is also a reusable tray that is also sturdier than its predecessor."

Initially, many mixes and double-coloured varieties will be delivered. As Christmas approaches, red and, to a much smaller extent, white will prevail. "We aim to stop using peat altogether in the future. When exactly that will be is different for each product, but we are setting our sights on 2026."
