India (Goa): Floriculture struggles to take root despite blossoming demand

The state receives 90 percent of its cut flowers from Mumbai and Bengaluru and is a long way off towards becoming Swayampurna in flower supply, finds out Shoma Patnaik.

Goa’s flower demand is blooming. Reflecting the healthy demand for flowers is the growing number of nurseries and florist shops in the state. In the earlier years, the Porvorim to Mapusa highway stretch along NH-17 had just three to four nurseries, with Mr Farmer the most popular and generally regarded as having the best collection of plants.

Now, there are about 12 nurseries on each side of the highway that sell plants, pots, and garden soil together with a remarkable range of garden accessories, which has made the Porvorim- Mapusa route a hub for gardening enthusiasts. New nurseries are coming up each season in different locations across the state as Goans enthusiastically grow winter annuals and perennial blossoms in their flat balconies.

Presently, with tourism at its season’s high, Goa’s flower demand is at its peak. The wedding boom due to destination weddings in the state has set the demand for flowers blooming. It is a busy time for florists in the state as they work extra hours dispatching chrysanthemums, tulips, orchids, and sunflowers to wedding décor companies.
