Colombian flowers are preparing to become a Valentine's Day gift in the United States, with the expectation of increasing sales in that country, its main market, and on which the region declares itself “dependent” since it is the destination of 80% of its production.
According to the Colombian Association of Flower Exporters (Asocolflores), this season creates 27,000 temporary jobs in the country, 65% of which are occupied by women.
The flower sector achieved record exports during the pandemic, crossing the $2,000 million barrier. The quarantine and restrictions forced people to stay at home and wanted to decorate them with flowers.
“In 2023, we estimate we could grow close to 1%, which would put us close to $2,060 million. With regard to volume, we estimate a decline of about 5%, mainly due to the decline in combined Demand in the United States,” said Andres Vernazza, executive vice president of Ascoflores.
