'Discover the story behind every flower:'

Ecuador: Mystic Flowers’ sustainable efforts captured in short videos

Sustainability is of paramount importance at Ecuadorian flower company Mystic Flowers. To show all the sustainable practices they have as a farm, they recently launched several short videos under the theme 'Discover the story behind every flower.'

Sustainability and Mystic Flowers
In 1997, Mystic Flowers started growing Ecuadorian Premium Flowers, and from the very beginning, they have been focused on making every step of the process functional, complete, innovative, and sustainable. This is explained by Marketing Manager Maria Belen Muñoz. She explains that their sustainability is based on three main pillars: social responsibility, environmental care, and labor standards.

Social responsibility
"When talking about social responsibility, we are aware of the social needs of our communities; we know that our actions and commitment as a company will make a powerful impact and increase the possibilities of real change.

Environmental care
Regarding environmental care, they take care of every resource involved in the flower production process. They are, for example, complying and going above all rules and regulations established by their government and certifications, such as Flor Ecuador, also at logistics and social levels. They are pioneers in the development of new organic fertilizers and nutrients made with microorganisms that maintain their soils well-balanced, rich in nutrients, and fertile, they treat and reuse 100% of their wastewater, their rainwater is captured, stored and used in the crop. And last but not least, they have become experts in ocean freight shipping from Ecuador to the world.

Labor standards
In this video above, you can see a day in the life of Adamary, one of their 3,500 collaborators. She is 26 years old and has worked as a field harvester at Mystic Flowers for three years now. Every morning, the Mystic bus picks her up in the center of Cayambe and takes her to the farm for a day's work. Check out the video to see what that looks like.

When talking about labor and the labor standards, at Mystic, they have 100% compliance with the Ecuadorian Labor Condition Regulatory Framework, one of the most, if not the strictest, in the region. Consistent training plans for their employees allow them to maintain personal and professional growth, and they support the government's program "Your First Job". 46% of Mystic's collaborators are women, and 54% are men, creating a gender equality place to work. 2% of their staff is between the age of 18-20, and 21% is over 40 years old. According to Belen, because Ecuadors economy is dollarized the living cost are very expensive, we are proud to say that all our workers receive fair payment accompanied with a great CSR program that keeps our workers healthy, striving and feeling empowered.

Part of this conditions and CRS program are, offering employees maternity benefits, such as 3 months of paid maternity leave, transportations to and from their homes, nutritional meals, and they provide medical checkups for their staff. "This helps us maintain less than 1% of absenteeism due to illness."

Quality
However, being a successful business entails more than social and environmental responsibility. The quality of the product is of utmost importance. In the video above, a peek inside the post-harvest area of Mystic. "This phase is crucial for us in maintaining the quality, freshness, and longevity of our flowers. Once the flowers are harvested, they pass through a pre cooling room, and a a micro spray tunnel that cleans flowers.. Then, they arrive in the cooled post-harvest area, where they are handed over to an expert classifier, who selects the flower on length, foliage, and bud size. The flowers move on to the flower packaging experts, where they are precisely manually packed. Finally, they are put in buckets with a hydrating solution that guarantees a great vase life.

Logistic efficiency
However, growing and packing a high-quality product does not result in a high-quality product for the end consumer. Efficient logistics are therefore crucial. In the video below, they explain how their packaging contributes to maintaining the freshness of the product and packaging that allows them to be more competitive in logistic issues in relation to weight and volume.
