Spring is in the air and so is the smell of fresh produce, lush plants and herbs, all thanks to Grow NYC. Coined as the sustainability resource for New Yorkers, Grow NYC celebrated its 39th annual spring plant distribution, hosting one of the biggest and oldest greenery sales to local community groups and green spaces. Mike Rezny, director of Green Space with Grow NYC, says the highly anticipated sale is a necessity for the neighborhood.
"We're providing people from all over Brooklyn with affordable fresh healthy plants vegetables and herbs," says Rezny. "Also things like flowers and natives they can plant in their gardens and tend to over the summer."
The plants are all grown by regional farmers and allow residents throughout all five boroughs to grow their gardens with fresh produce, at a fraction of the price. Along with an unbeatable price, shoppers with a green thumb can also count on access to farm to table food, in the face of insecurity.
"With the price of groceries skyrocketing as we speak its amazing to be able to grow our own for a lot less," says Courtney Childress, a local community gardener.
