Debo Plant, a potted plant nursery based in Asten, Brabant (Netherlands), has recently outfitted its entire greenhouse with smart, energy-efficient LED grow lighting from Wivid. Brothers Ton, John, and Peter de Boer decided to invest in LED technology after years of setbacks caused by fire, hailstorms, and severe weather.
Hein de Boer, son of co-owner John, explains: "After the fire in 2013 — caused by a faulty HPS lamp — we had to seriously rethink our lighting strategy. We wanted something safer and more efficient. Less heat generation, reduced fire risk, and above all: a forward-thinking approach to growing."
The decision to go with Wivid was an easy one, according to Hein. "We had a good feeling from the start — quick communication, fair pricing, and strong local support. Debo's greenhouse is now fully equipped with Wivid's HR9 ZEN Toplights. These dimmable LEDs can be wirelessly controlled via gateways and segmented into zones. "That gives us maximum flexibility for every stage of the crop cycle," says Hein. "With the separate Far-Red modules, we can provide our Nephrolepis varieties with the right lighting even during the dark winter months. That way, we maintain top-quality growth while saving energy."
Debo Plant cultivates the exclusive Nephrolepis Boston Green Moment on one hectare — a lush, deep-green curly fern variety they've bred and selected themselves for its strong leaf structure and vibrant color. On a smaller scale, they also grow Streptocarpus Parfuflora, a flowering houseplant with a loyal customer base.
Despite facing three major setbacks in just five years — fire, hail, and storm damage — the De Boer brothers remain optimistic. "We've got a strong mindset — we don't give up easily," says Peter de Boer. "And with such reliable technology supporting us, we're confident about the future."
