India: Fire station set to ensure floral carpets for Onam celebration

Aimed at making flowers more affordable during the Onam season, Chrysanthemum cultivation has begun at the Thrikkara Fire Station Compound. The flowers are being grown in 200 grow bags placed on top of the underground water tank at the fire station. The responsibility of nurturing the plants rests with the fire and rescue personnel themselves.

KK Vijayan, a native of Thrikkakara and recipient of the Young Farmer Award, is providing technical guidance for the project. The Chrysanthemum saplings were sourced from a nursery in Thrissur.

This initiative aims to ensure a steady and affordable supply of flowers for making pookkalams, the decorative floral arrangements that are an integral part of Onam celebrations.
